British Birds Rarities Committee
Decisions
The British Birds
Rarities Committee is the official adjudicator of rare birds in Great
Britain.
Its members
are democratically elected by birders representatives in each County
and serve for a fixed term. It publishes its annual report in British Birds,
a leading journal for the modern birder.
The following
information has been extracted and updated from the latest report and
provides details of the accepted records of rare birds in Yorkshire.
REPORTS
The Black Lark,
Spurn 27th April 1984, (the late N.A.Bell , A.Cruickshank, B.R.Spence),
has been accepted by the Committee in the 2003 Report. It was a First for
Britain. This record was first submitted to the BBRC in 1999. It was first
seen by four observers, one of whom was a non-birder. The others included
Barry Spence (then warden of Spurn Point Nature Reserve ) and the late Nick
Bell, who submitted notes and also wrote an account at the time in the Spurn
Bird Observatory. It was pended by BBRC
following the first circulation but during the process, additional notes
were submitted by the fourth observer, Alex Cruickshank .The file then
underwent three re-circulations of BBRC before finally being accepted and
being passed to The British Ornithologists' Union Records Committee (BOURC) for ratification of an addition to the British List.
